Owners' equity, also called capital, is any debt owed to the business owners. For example, if you invested $50,000 of your savings to start a business, that amount is recorded in a capital account, also referred to as an owners'-equity account. If the company is a corporation, the words Stockholders' Equity are used instead of Owner's Equity. The accounting remains the same, and it is ownership equity spread out among shareholders.

Owner's Equity-along with liabilities-can be thought of as a source of the company's assets. It is sometimes referred to as the book value of the company, because owner's equity is equal to the reported asset amounts minus the reported liability amounts. At the end of each accounting cycle, a business' profits get transferred to a capital account. It includes both tangible and intangible items (such as brand names and reputation / goodwill).Both owner's equity and stockholders' equity accounts will normally have credit balances.

Equity is the residual claim or interest of the most junior class of investors in assets, after all liabilities are paid. Shareholders' equity represents the remaining interest in assets of a company, spread among individual shareholders of common or preferred stock. If all shareholders are in one and the same class, they share equally in ownership equity from all perspectives. However, shareholders may allow different priority ranking among themselves by the use of share classes, and options.

Some of the most common classes of stock include
Common Stock
Preferred stock
Share capital
Stock options

The stockholders' equity section of a corporation's balance sheet is:
Paid-in Capital
Retained Earnings
Treasury Stock

Also called net worth or shareholders' equity, Capital is total assets minus total liabilities of an individual or company well represented by the following basic accounting education.

Assets = Liabilities + Owner's Equity
